Hi i’m mala krishnan
I am a founder of Malesian Keittiö Klubi(Malaysian Kitchen Club) in Helsinki. My work focuses on introducing and celebrating specialist Southeast Asian ingredients—particularly from Peninsular Malaysia—through cooking, teaching, and storytelling.
My relationship with food began early. Growing up in a farming family, I was surrounded by the rhythm of the land and the value of fresh produce. I learned to recognise ingredients not just by taste, but by season, place, and care. That early experience shaped my understanding of how deeply food connects us to the environment and to one another.
This inspired me to pursue a career in the culinary world, where I now combine professional experience with a lifelong passion for food and land. Working with food over the years has strengthened that connection. It has brought me closer to the people behind ingredients — farmers, growers, and communities and deepened my appreciation for traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Simple, honest ingredients, treated with respect, remain at the heart of everything I do.
Beyond workshops and teaching, my work with food continues in many forms. Based in Helsinki, I collaborate on cooking events, food experiences, and projects that bring Southeast Asian ingredients and stories into new settings. Through Malesian Keittiö Klubi, I create spaces where people can engage more deeply with food culture, heritage, and the connections between ingredients, place, and community.
I enjoy collaborating with people and organisations who share similar values — care for ingredients, respect for cultural knowledge, and a desire to create meaningful food experiences. My work includes teaching, storytelling, recipe development, cultural programming, and creative partnerships, all rooted in authenticity and a deep respect for origin and tradition.
RUAN is a natural extension of this journey: a project that brings together indigenous food knowledge, ecological awareness, and cultural exchange. It reflects my belief that food can be a powerful way to reconnect with the land, with memory, and with one another.
This website is an evolving space that grows alongside my work. Here, I share recipes, reflections, projects, and ideas that are close to my heart. My hope is that it offers something thoughtful, grounded, and nourishing — a place where food becomes a way to connect more deeply with land, culture, and community.
If my work resonates with you, I would love to hear from you. Whether you are interested in a collaboration, an event, or simply sharing ideas, please feel free to get in touch mala@ruan-malesiankeittioklubi.com
